Gourmet Cafe, Kuta (Bali)
The Gourmet Café is in Kuta, very close to Denpasar City, and it is open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, serving a range of high-quality meals made from fresh ingredients that will please even the fussiest foodie. Some regular favourites include Eggs Benedict, quiche, and their Italian-style coffee which they serve with a small biscuit. The café also offers cereals, juices, smoothies, pastries, pies, barbeque chicken, salad and gourmet breakfast meals that are delicious but can set you back 150,000 IDR. It’s the perfect place to grab a quick eat-in meal or roast chicken and gravy to take home for dinner later.
The eatery has a build-your-own salad or sandwich concept that makes it popular with many health-conscious guests or those with dietary requirements. You can choose your own desired ingredients and toppings, and that way you can avoid too much dressing and control how much oil and salt is in your meal.
The staff are friendly and efficient, and the establishment is very clean, with a sophisticated but restful atmosphere. The café is air-conditioned with a modern layout and though smoking is not allowed indoors, there are outdoor smoking areas in the shade outside. Gourmet Café is definitely the place to go for a satisfying brunch after a night out, and though its prices might be more than most other cafes, it’s still considered cheap by Australian standards and many find the quality of the food and service well worth the price.

Bajra Sandhi Historical Museum, Denpasar (Bali)
Bajra Sandhi Historical Museum (or The Balinese Struggle Monument as it is sometimes known) is located in the middle of Denpasar City. It is an historical monument that was built to commemorate the Balinese people’s struggle against the Dutch colonial invasion. The structure is the epitome of strong Balinese architecture with all of the detailed carvings adoring the outside of the building.
This site is quite the spectacle when viewing it for the first time on ground level. It is visited by thousands of locals and tourists alike and also used for many religious ceremonies. The very tall structure was erected in 1978 and President Megawti Sukarno Putri inaugurated it in 2003. This site is said to have a soul devoted to the spirit of the people who dealt with the terrible struggles. It represents everything that is strong in Balinese culture and is there to remind the younger generations that they need to preserve this culture in able to move forward through adversity in their country. The site itself contains 33 dioramas showing the political and economic history of Bali dating back as far as 300,000BC right through to the independence era from 1950 – 1975.
Tanjung Benoa Beach, South Kuta (Bali)
Tanjung Benoa Beach is a wide and sparse white sand stretch located in Bali’s south east. There are plenty of warungs run by friendly locals who will beckon you in to try their delicious traditional street food menus or a fresh young coconut they have just cut down from a nearby palm tree.
While there are all the regular beach things to do like eating, drinking, sunbaking and swimming, by far the most popular thing to do on Tanjung Benoa Beach are the water sports. The program is extensive and you will lose at least a whole day here, if not a few days when you decide to return for a second round. It is hard to stay away.
Riding a jet ski can be a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. You can hire them out on the beach for half or full days and sometimes by the hour from several operators. We suggest starting off with a friend who has done it before so they can show you the ropes, otherwise make sure you ask the operators if they can give you some tips.
Parasailing is another really awesome thing you can take part in on Tanjun Benoa Beach. This activity consists of the individual being strapped into a harness at the end of a line behind a speed boat. As the speed boat takes off the parachute opens above the person in the harness and you will fly around for up to 20 minutes. So much fun, we can’t even tell you. A must do when you visit this beach as it is the perfect way to take in the views of the area.
If heights scare you or you want more of a group activity then we think the Banana Boat Ride. Like the parasailing, you will be towed behind a speed boat roaring along the calm and flat waters of Tanjung Benoa Beach. But what is most different here is the blow up banana you are straddling with your mates is dragged along the water. It tends to get a bit bumpy and there is potential for you to fly off into the water. Life jackets are provided. Ride at your own risk of course.

Buahan, Danau Batur (Bali)
Buahan village is located on the eastern shores of one of the most admired places in Bali, Danau Batur, and is a place not often visited by the average backpacker. Tourist buses tend to avoid stopping down at the lake due to the steep narrow road that leads to it, but the view is beautiful, with lush forest and enormous rock formations to feast your eyes on along the way. When you reach the dazzling water you will see the impressive Gunung Batur rising up to the sky, and you might be surprised to know that you’re actually inside an active volcano.
From Buahan you can see crowded tourist areas like the lookouts over Gunung Batur, but the village of Buahan, known as the base of the lake, is far more adventurous. To get there, pick from any of the roads that go to Penelokan, though the one that goes via Tirta Empul is by far the most straightforward route. Unfortunately, you will have to fork out an entrance fee to use the T-junction to get down into the depths of the caldera.
There are many accommodation options around the lake, particularly at Kedisan. The road that takes you up to this village has some reliable losmens but beware of just accepting the asking price – it’s usually inflated and it’s best to bargain. The section of the lake near Abang is breathtaking, with black wild goats, orange trees and refreshingly clean air. Buahan is a wonderful spot to visit if you’re looking for something off the beaten track that is the utmost in relaxation and scenery.
